I'm looking to all of you fantastically brilliant computer nerds out there for some advice... Do I save some money and upgrade my 3 year old Dell desktop (has a nice big monitor) with Windows 7, or spend a bunch and go with the brand new iMac?

what is wrong with your current windows? you dont HAVE to upgrade.
if you really want to upgrade to new windows, find someone with a microsoft blue badge and have them get you a copy of windows 7 for employee price, (30-40ish?)

It depends on the stats of your dell, and what plan to use your computer for.
I've been using Windows 7 for a while now, and it's absolutely fantastic, having spent so long on Vista.
But if all you want is something to Google image search dongs and watch tube8.com; you'd be wasting a lot of money on a mac.

Assuming there is some reason why you need to upgrade from your current XP/Vista, I'd say just stick with what you have.
That is unless you have some practical reason to switch and/or upgrade to a newer system and this is just an excuse to do so.
I say that as a devout Mac fan-boy.

However, especially if your primary uses are graphic, Mac's the way to go. Plus, Macs are what the cool kids use.

Adding memory is usually the $50-100 solution to that problem. Photo editors in general, and Adobe ones in particular, want as much memory as they can get.
I like Windows 7, but I'm probably biased since I work at Microsoft. It is way better than Vista, and I like it better than XP. I was never much of a OS X fan, even though I like the technology that it is based on. Apple hardware is nice though. The nice PC hardware, especially laptops, are not sold in easy to shop at places like Best Buy.

Actually, the best buy in Bellevue has an Apple table in it. That being said, go to an actual apple store. And make sure it's an Apple store, not a "Mac" store. (those ones aren't real apple stores, just authorized retailers with deceptive names.)

The Mac Store on 45th is awesome. I've never bought a machine there, but they've serviced out of warranty things for me a couple times at reasonable rates and with stellar results.
Sean - You should get the mac. You know it's what you want, and another good sales quarter would really help my AAPL price.

Windows 7 is awesome and I have a hard time believing it wouldn't run just fine on a 3 year old PC. Mine is 2.5 years old and it works like a dream.
When it comes to Mac Vs PC, I swing both ways. (Rawr!) But I'm having a hard time figuring out how buying a new Mac is spending "a little" more money than grabbing just an OS. Macs are great but you definitely pay a price premium.
If you were looking to upgrade to a new laptop, for example, I'd say go Mac and then find someone who can get you Win7 on the chizeap for dual booting. But based on your description it sounds like the cheapest upgrade is to Win7 on existing hardware.

But am still not sold either way, I guess I'm still on the fence about getting a new computer or not... which I guess is a different question than whether I upgrade my older PC (it's actually over 4 years old, not 3 as I had previously stated) to Windows 7 versus Vista.
Those brand new iMac 27" screens look freaking gorgeous though. Maybe I will go back to the store and let some Genius sway me in the more expensive direction or maybe I'll get help getting Windows 7 from one of you nice fellows? Shit, the more I think about it as I write this, I still have no idea what to do...
