Long story short, I just bought this from a bike shop here in Seattle, turns out it's stolen. I'd like to return it to the owner if possible. Just trying to put the word out before I return it for a refund.

Well, I'm not trying to give the shop a bad wrap here but it was Recycled Cycles. When I asked the guy at the shop why they didn't check if the stuff that they're buying isn't stolen before they purchase used bikes, his response was that it was not the law to check. Kinda makes me think.

it's true, they're not required to check. did you tell the cops that you bought it there, though? the shop is required to keep a record of all purchases and hand them over to law enforcement - so now the cops in theory have a lead on the original thief.

also, and i didn't know this, but one of the things you lose when you are convicted of burglary, theft, or possession of stolen goods is your right to sell to pawn shops in washington state -- but only if they know that about you:

yeah, i think at this point the police will have to be involved. The shop is looking for the paperwork on the person who sold it.

So the story is that the owner of the bike was selling it on CL back in 08. He arranged to meet with the potential buyer at a Starbucks in Green Lake. That potential buyer took it for a test ride and left a cell phone as collateral. To the sellers surprise, the dude just straight took off with the bike. 1.5 years later, the bike will finally return back to the owner.

yeah he said that he made a post in CL back in the day. He offered me a Motobecane frame as an appreciation for getting him his bike back. Will be getting my money back today from the shop as well. Glad this dude is getting his bike back.
