Yup, you know that hit and run Pete and I reported on Thursday when shitheel hit me and then him 3 blocks later with his Audi SUV? I just got mailed a $103 no-helmet ticket for that. Funny story, I had my helmet with me. Petes the one who said he didn't have his helmet. I never said anything.

I'm taking this shit to court. Fuck this guy. But not before I call King 5 news. Fuggit. I've got a couple hundred bones to torch on this dickwad.

What a complete fucking asshole.

Edit: Oh man, I have a better idea. It involves a certain bicycling mayor.

Again, a prime example of why the helmet law is a terrible law, and why Cascade is a horrible organization for pushing it.

Scott, keep me up to date on what you're doing. peter@shortbus.org.

Rule: Don't call the cops if you don't have a helmet on unless you are prepared to pay $103.

and even $103 is going to be cheaper than what you're going to drag out of the hit & run guy.
Protip: the media will focus on you being a dangerous law-scoffing hoodlum. Local news is not our ally.

If this is your first no helmet ticket and you show up in court with a new helmet and a receipt, they will drop the ticket, its in the public health code. Then take the helmet back to REI.

Pro-tip: if you actually intend to make public hay of an issue, do not post "dickwad"-laden anger on the tubes first.

It damages your ethos.

last night i saw two bike cops riding in the dark without lights one handed. they had some starbucks in their other hand.

at least you didn't get a ticket for not having lights too.

parallel story: last night I was at Dicks, on Broadway getting some dinner after some zipcar adventures. As I was leaving a couple of foot-patrol officers came up for shakes. Both were younger dudes, and were scoping my LHT pretty hard. Currently I'm without a headlight and didn't want no gruff, so I pulled a Jedi mind trick ("these are not the droids you're looking for") and they laughed and told me to be careful in traffic with no light. THe end.

Calling the cops on someone and getting a ticket sent to you is total garbage. That being said, I do see a tiny parallel between this and the stories you see in the news of the "Someone stole all the lights from my grow operation" 911 calls.

They have judges in Ballard?

Scott, I recommend venue shopping.

Apparently I have a doppelgänger in Ballard. He is sharp dressed, speaks Spanish, and yells at ladies on the street about their shoes, while on his bike.

I fear someone out there is plotting to replace me.

Here he is at the corner of 22nd and Market.

I think you are describing the final season of Lost, of which this character is a part of. Rogelio's Doppelganger?

What a nice guy!

I just made some ethnic jokes that offended pete's old girlfriend and contributed to her general hatred.

The frustrating thing here is that it's unlikely anything will happen to the guy without pushing on the cops. The guy made it pretty clear he was uninterested in anything but finding fault with Scott and me. I have no problem paying the ticket as long as that guy also gets fucked by the long dick of the law.

id follow up with it heavily. someone took a ticket for no helmet, thats fine, but make damn sure they follow up on the hit and run? isn't that a felony here?

if they don't follow up on the hit and run, make a huge stink out of it.

I agree with Derrick. "If I broke the law, fine, but he hit TWO of us" is a more compelling argument than "Please hurt him for violating the law while ignoring my violation."

I don't know the story beyond what's been posted in this thread, but fuck, that sounds like something is all kinds of fucked and I bet a collection could go around to defray that ticket if it gets a guy fucked for hit and run on cyclists. I'll throw down $20 and a flask of whiskey to sneak into his sentencing.

What was that, Miles, about keeping it PG-13? Oh well. Whiskey in a courtroom.

Edit upon further consideration:

Another way of spinning that is "I broke the law and am fully willing, and indeed HAVE, dealt with the consequences society has decided I deserve. I only ask the same of this man." It's not a bad line, if a bit wonky. But still, fairness sells.

IANAL, but I'm pretty sure that the law makes no distinction to the manner or violence of the contact (expect upwardly, e.g. vehicular homicide), just that it's made and the driver left the scene. If dude was a dick and did it twice, it's not an accident and it's assault. Fuck him.

I'll buy you a beer later on, but you know what miles, sometimes you can be a real piece of shit. You'd have felt differently if it were you.

Frankly I didn't call because he hurt me. I called because after doing it to me, he then did it to Pete just 3 blocks later. And he's going to do it to some other cyclist. Maybe you. Maybe Alex. Or maybe it's Jeni - AGAIN. She just got sideswiped by someone doing this same shit. Maybe it won't be a nudge next time. Or maybe next time he drives someone off the road. Or maybe he slams on his brakes in front of someone and fucks them up good and proper. Yeah we've never seen that happen.

So instead of being a snarky little fuck, why don't you just sit down and have a great big cup of shut the fuck up.

You wanted to get under my skin? Congrats. You win. Go you.

Compliment I guess.

Seriously though, don't confuse a one-liner joke on this horse-cock infested internet playground with a serious attack on your situation.

you guys are so sweet.

Anyway,
Details!

Did you get an incident #? Did you get the officer's business card?
Have you followed up? Did they investigate the driver for hit and run?

If not, you should file a formal complaint with the police department and email the mayor.

working on it. i got an incident number and the cop's card. i haven't followed up with it as i've been in san diego not thinking about seattle. tomorrow morning they're getting some followup. if they're investigating the hit and run (should be easy, they have plates, driver id, a number of witnesses), i have zero problems, but i'd put money on them having it in the circular file at present.

by the way: taking CA booze orders. who wants stuff? email me.

Gusano Rojo Mezcal.

Tip: Do not exceed 5L or the TSA will page you ask what you want done with the extra bottle they've taken out of your suitcase.
