I'm sure I'm violating protocol and years of tradition with this my first post, but I thought you might be interested/amused/disgusted by the following:
If you don't wanna follow the link, it's basically this: the douchebags that run Idaho wanna law REQUIRING a front brake on fixies. Sure, it's only Idaho but that's right next door and that shit can spread. Or not. As you were. Happy Friday.
PS Obviously I'm new here, but that's no reason for unwarranted civility.

I don't think that proposed law is stupid, as long as they apply it to coaster brakes as well. All bicycles should have two brakes, one can be pedal powered (a coaster brake or fixed gear).
alex (who rode fixed gear bikes for ~5 years, but stopped long before joining point83...but my fixed gear bikes always had a front brake)

Breaks are good, people can get hurt without them.
As an ex-patriot from Idaho I fully support this.

Brakes are good; all my bikes have 'em. And I'm also an expatriate from Idaho (some 24 years on). BUT... My beef isn't with brakes (or Idaho), it's with legal mandates requiring them. I find it ironic that a state like Idaho, in which personal responsibility is an almost sacred belief, is leading the charge like this. And given the nature of the Helmet Law Holy War I have to admit that I'm a little surprised this issue hasn't evoked more than a yawn, but maybe that's a good thing, I dunno.

Don't be silly, the only people riding bicycles in idaho are children. Since most children's bikes don't have brakes this is an obvious attempt to arrest & punish all children in the state for disrespecting their elders.....the next step is obviously a "Battle Royale" (ref: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-T7yPJVvXw) type solution.

honestly i think enforcement of the current stopping distance laws are more important. i've seen lots of bikes that stop worse than fixed gears. i've also had plenty of friends with cars that would never pass the motor vehicle stopping requirement.
