I dunno about the rest of you, but I'm getting really fucking pissed off with every single dumbshit asking me if I'm going to ride the STP just because I ride a bike. And it doesn't matter what bike I'm on, my fixie, racebike, commuter - hell, even if I rode a tall-bike, the naïve would still probably ask me if I'm riding the STP.

And not just that, they are impressed when I ride as little as 2 miles. So what? Couldn't anyone ride a bicycle 2 miles? That's hardly a warmup for me. Is it really that hard or is everyone incredibly lazy and/or pussies when it comes to riding in traffic? On an average week I ride 120 miles (and I can back up that figure with my Garmin).

So yes, one year I was suckered into riding the STP. I did it in a day and probably won't do it again for a long time if ever. The route is boring, long and overall not worth the effort compared to plenty of other routes around the northwest. Like all Ben Countries for example (my apologies Ben for not making it this year).

But still, all the damn cagers out there who don't know shit about biking still think for some stupid reason that the STP is the epitome of all things bicycle of the northwest when really what I desire is to get up to Cat 3 in WSBA and/or win the DBDH and/or just get to the fucking grocery store.

Now I'm kinda risking being seen as an insensitive fuck for posting this rant online, but I'm really just trying to release this tension before it turns into a lecture/insult storm on the next person to ask me the question. We all live in the same world and shit, and I figure I need to make an attempt to get along with these people. So I thought I'd discuss this topic here since I know you're all part of what might be the only group of people that knows how I feel.

How do the rest of you guys and girls deal with this?

I figure they're just trying to make small talk and don't have any better topics to discuss. I suggest steering the small talk away from the STP and into something you enjoy about bicycles. Or find a clever way to escape the conversation entirely.

One day I had a flat tire about 5-6 miles from home. I had no spares or pumps or anything really to repair it. I was prepared for a long walk home.
About a mile into the walk a squid pulled over to the side of the road, Provided me with a spare tire, pump and levers. I offered reimbursement for his time & tube, he refused. I thanked him excessively.
That day I realized that its fucking stupid to get pissed about stupid shit in the very very small subculture we ride in.

All I'm sayin', its cool to rant, everyone does, but I hope deep down you don't really give a shit about this. Its still far far better to be asked "Are you riding the STP" compared to "Hey brah, did you see the fuckin' game last night? aw man, the TEAM A totally kicked TEAM B's ass"

Just tell the truth: "I've done the STP before, and I thought it was boring." [Which, btw, is pretty much what I think of the STP, too.]

If you want to be more positive, add on something like: "I'd rather spend the weekend bike camping on the Olympic Peninsula." or "I'd rather train for the Dead Baby Downhill." or "I'd rather train for the .83 French-Fry eating contest by visiting all the Dick's in Western Washington in one day."
