Because not everyone will be able to go on this little boat trip and this will mostly involve people outside the .83 friend circle as well.

I'll bug up the person who mentioned it to me and see if they can point out where the information is. They generally are pretty in the know so I trust that they aren't BS'ing me but at this time I fail to have anything in writing. I shall report back ASAP with more info.

Ok, I just did some serious googling and made some phone calls. There is little to no info online regarding this, but after speaking to someone at the Coast Guard, here is our legal requirement:

When we are ready to depart, we need to contact the VTS on Channel 12 and inform them of where we are crossing the ship lane and at what time. Once we are clear of the ship lane, we need to radio in that we are clear.

Yes indeedy. In case the need for additional information arises, the phone number for VTS is 206-217-6040.

I need to order this (not just for this trip...it will be useful for our kayaking in general). Can anyone recommend the Long Haul Trucker of kayak-friendly VHF radios? Are any of the $100ish waterproof ones that I see on Amazon good enough?

Rules for crossing a vessel separation scheme (shipping lane) is here
http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/mwv/navrules/rules/Rule10.htm

You *could* get fined for not alerting Vessel Traffic Service of your crossing the shipping lanes, but it would be an embarrassment for them unless there was amazingly good reason for them to fine you.

If it is foggy, call in your position coming in and going out. If you want to play it absolutely safe, go ahead and call it in. That is what VHF radios are for.

Otherwise, don't fuck with your radios. Especially not on 12, 14, 16, or 22A.

Bottom line: keep watch and don't get anywhere near big commercial traffic. I promise you though, neither USCG nor VTS really care about getting notified every single time a pleasure craft crosses the shipping lane.

Have fun, y'all. I'll try to send some sunny weather up your way.

Fuckit - just bring bottlerockets and fire them at oncoming vessels and tell them to prepare to be boarded ye scurvy dogs - and then paddle REALLY hard to try and catch up.

Anyone looking for a ride out to the island?

My boat is just about ready to go, this will be her madien sail.

I'd like to have a couple people onboard as this will be my 1st sail on the new boat and it might be a bit much to handle solo.

I'm leaving from the 1st ave bridge, we can meet there, or I can swing by Harbor Island, West Seattle and you can jump on.

I am, since it looks like it would be a huge bitch to get a kayak in a way that I could be at Alki to leave with the group, and I don't want to make the crossing solo. I've done a lot of kayaking, but almost all of it was whitewater in colorado and west virginia. Waves that move? Tides? Scary shit.

I do have a bunch of experience sailing on the Chesapeake, so I should be of some assistance.

Fred -- We have one spare kayak carrying slot on our car if that makes getting a kayak to Alki easier for you. We don't have a spare kayak though.

Justin and Kristen: Are the two of you still planning on borrowing the tandem? We should figure out logistics of where to meet on Saturday and what time. It would be helpful to have at least one of you help us load kayaks on the car(s).

Derrick: What time are we launching, and what is the launch location?

I'm glad we are doing this in July instead of Juneary.

8 sounds good.

Kristen and/or Justin, that would mean getting to our house (near Roosevelt Whole Foods) around 7:15 or 7:20 to load boats. I think you've both been here, but PM for our address if not.

Justin, I just got the greenlight for sailing adventures as long as I can be back downtown by 1700 on sunday. I'll meet you at the 1st Ave bridge, but you'll need to provide google-maps to your dock.

You know the ped/ bike path for the 1st ave bridge? I'm right next to that. I'm on the north side of the bridge. Google maps says it's Front street, but it looks more like a gravel drive way. In the map you can see the empty slip, that's mine. There is a locked gate. My Jeep will be there, it's painted Camo, can't miss it.
You up for heading out Friday afterwork? like 6ish? How about you Balderdash? Friday ok? Can you coem to the marina, option 2 is to swing by Harbor Island or the West Seattle Water Taxi dock. Not sure about bike parking at either.
I'll have the dog with me. He hates strangers, it'll be fun!

Oh, and I remember roughly where your house is, though I don't recall the precise address. PM sent.

Kristen is out, anyone want to share our tandem kayak with Justin, or do any of the sailors want to give him a ride out there? Paddling the tandem solo doesn't work that well.

I can ditch my kayak in favor of the tandem, unless Justin finds another option entirely or would rather hop aboard a sailboat. Let me know!

Quick question on the tandem, though - what is its gear stowage space like? Would gear need to obtain passage on another boat or does it have hatches?
