Edit:
MEET FRIDAY, JUNE 25th AT 5:00 P.M. (boat sails at 5:30) AT COLEMAN DOCK FOR THE LARGE GROUP DEPARTURE.
----------------------
So the past two 4th of July holidays were observed on a Friday which provided a unique opportunity for the Thursday ride to be morphed into a camping trip which somehow changed from Green Mountain to Joeball Mountain. The idea was to also let you get back in town early enough to utilize the rest of your 3-day weekend. Anyway this year I've just decided to move Joeball Mountain a weekend earlier so go use your 3-day weekend (if you have one) to the fullest.

Either date works fine for me.
I now own a touring bike, and my two-person tent is on it's way from REI Outlet. I'm in.

i like joeball mountain because the weather is usually so predictably nice that no tent is needed.

Without a tent, where would I hide the corndogs and cheeseburgers?

or walk up the mountain on the motorcycle trails, slip, badly sprain your ankle, and get "rescued" by a very drunk woman on a 4 wheeler...all without making it to camp.

regular bike tires will do you just fine if thats what you have. there is a mile or two of dirt road at the end but it's no biggie. there are a few parts where we're all lost and yelling and complaining and walking up steep parts anyways.

I loved that this left straight from WLC on a Thursday night like a normal ride and resulted in camping insanity and such - but if this idea is dead for another few years, I'd vote Saturday night as it makes it easier to not be rushed by work to get out of town, and gives the hardcore the ability to make it two nights if they wish.
Either way, I'm in! Unless another flu bug decides I can't come bike camping (grumble, grumble).

summer weekends are precious. leave on friday night and make Saturday a viable summer weekend day for other stuff.

Is this where I reserve a ticket for Joeball mountain? Who do I give my money to? I want to make sure my reservation is secured. I can offer you a deposit, or perhaps we can use an escrow service. I am very excited and totally committed to attending this event, and I thought that everyone should now just how excited and committed I am.

Something has come up (a cousin's wedding), and I am no longer able to attend. Who do I speak to about the return of my deposit?

I'm a maybe. This sounds like great fun, but my bike and I are hopping a plane to Belgium by way of Gay* Old Paris the following Monday morning, and I may be doing last minute packing and/or freaking out. Thusly, I prefer Friday.

For us nine-to-fivers, how long is the ride post-ferry? Will there be a group heading out in the afternoon/evening or are folks taking off earlier on Friday?

Random fact I learned while reading about Elvis and Seattle this morning: the Fun Forest used to be called 'Gayland'.

I appreciate hearing peoples takes on their preference, I wouldn't expect a unanimous vote.
Friday Pros:
-You start your weekend as soon as you get off work.
-You have the potential to be back in Seattle before noon on Saturday.
-We get first dibs on camp sites over the cars.
Friday Cons:
-You have to make the 5:30 pm boat to make it to camp before dark. (~3 hour travel time).
-The group may get divided into multiple sailings
-The liquor store may close.
-Doubtful that we will ride to the top (but it would be fun, stargazing perhaps)
Saturday Pros
-Potential to leave in one group (I propose the 10am sailing again)
-Potential to ride a new, longer route, (more dirt roads possibly)
-Time to set up camp then ride to the top of the mtn for awesome views
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrjoeball/3564925417/in/set-72157618841377085/
-More time to ride trails or hang out at camp
-All daylight
-Swim?
Saturday Cons
-Less time to do 'other' things this weekend
-The gates open for cars to drive in at 9am on Sat so the horse trailers and yer mom might have first pick spots by the time we get to camp
-More time means more food/drink to haul up.
Please continue to discuss.

In 2008 I made it most of the way up the gravel/dirt road with 28mm touring tires on a road bike loaded down with 30 lbs of crap.
That said, I'm still glad I'll be doing it with 32mm tires this year.

I could make the 530 Friday sailing easy enough if I ride into work with my gear as I'm already downtown.

MEET FRIDAY, JUNE 25th AT 5:00 P.M. (boat sails at 5:30) AT COLEMAN DOCK FOR THE LARGE GROUP DEPARTURE.
OK I'm pretty sold on Friday, a 5:30 boat has been reasonable enough for the past 2 years for 9-5ers that have some level of flexibility. We will have a booze/food stop on the way, just bring your minimal camping gear and your bike.
The big sellers are this is flexible, people can do one night and then get back on Sat or people can stay 2 nights if they want. Also no competing with cars for spots and less neighbors to piss off for a Friday party.
Derrick can still lead a later group on the 6:45 or 7:50 boat Friday night. (BUT I HIGHLY SUGGEST MAKING THE 5:30 BOAT) Derrick will take the classic route, regardless you will get to camp after dark so bring a light, keep your riding partners in site and be prepared to meet the insanity of Colonel Kurtz's army for the 5:30 boaters that ate the whole cookie.

you'll be walking up bits in either case, but ss mtb will have way more fun on the way down.
