Looks like Adam S and myself are prolly gonna do this, August 8 thru 11... hopefully 24 hrs will be enough time to recover after the DBDH, before leaving Sunday morning. :P
Anyone who doesn't have work or other commitments should come join us!!! Still flexible on dates, but not for too much longer... Adam's about to ask for the time off work.
However, if someone wants to go but could only swing three days, instead of four, I suppose we could drive down to South Prairie, near Enumclaw (have a friend there we could leave a car with) and just do the RAMROD route.... 154 miles, so much easier to do in three days.

I've been as far as somewhere-past-Greenwater. you can parallel a lot of 410 on logging roads which are a lot more fun.
This sounds fun but timing will be an issue for me, as well as taking time away from work. I'm an unlikely candidate at this point but will keep my eyes on this thread and let ya know when the dates become more solid.

No, I'm going to be in Banff for a week, so this weekend is out. Definitely interested in later this summer however. 3-day weekends are always easier for me work-wise than 4, so I'd lean towards that if possible, but can make 4 if needed.

Thanks for the heads-up. I don’t suppose you have a route link, handy? I’d probably just vote for taking 410 since, if I recall, it does have wide shoulders, but ... still curious to see your route.
Also: do you or anyone know of any good primitive camping spots, near Greenwater?? I figure there's got to be options, but don’t know what/where. (pretty sure there are no beer stores anywhere from Ashford to Greenwater, along this route, so...)
Anyway, here’s some camping/mileage ideas ... btw, neither of the above includes, for Day 2, the loop up to Paradise, which adds 5 miles and 500’ elevation.
3-day option:
Day 1: West Seattle to this one FS campground near Ashford ... 82 miles and 1800+ ft elev. gain
Day 2: Ashford area to somewhere near where SR410 leaves the park ... 58 miles and 6200+ ft elev. gain
Day 3: back home to Seattle ... 73 miles and mostly downhill/flat
4-day option:
Day 1: West Seattle to this one FS campground near Ashford ... 82 miles and 1800+ ft elev. gain
Day 2: Ashford area to Ohanepecosh CG ... 41 miles and 3700+ ft elev. gain

mostly i just followed the terrain going up the white river, with some printouts from google earth that gave clues about where the roads, old bridges, and settled areas were. minimal backtracking due to washouts and the like.
Plenty of primitive camping to find if you get on the other side of the river from 410 (Weyerhaeuser seems to be OK with non-motorized travel through their land, they don't officially want you camping but whatever as long as you're stealthy) I think I wound up camping around 47° 4'45.68"N 121°35'13.89"W but that is just a vague recollection from looking at the map.

can't get the vacation time myself, but if you want to cut off distance without using a car you could also time the trip to catch the sounder. weekdays only but it's the closest thing we have to the awesome european trains.

looks like the southbound train would have to be 610 or 650 am (ugh) ... but hey Adam, I'd be up for that if you want to. doing the whole thing on weekdays would certainly be better, traffic-wise.

I like the idea of doing this with the train leaving monday morning.
I am into this as well, especially since my work has just switched over to be exclusively contract-based instead of hourly — I don't have to sit in the office 4 days a week no more. That'll cut out 100 miles a week, but this could help make it up :)
Lee also had some ideas about taking the Sounder to Tacoma, riding to Ranier, then through Gifford Pinchot around St. Helens, down to the Columbia, then to Portland, taking the Sounder back.
STP without the junk miles.

I think I am going to get the whole week off, but want to be back Thurs the 12 at the latest for a surf expedition at la push. I kinda like the sounder idea to add more time to being in the not Seattle area more.
