Sarah and I took a few days off and spent the last five days cycling across the state (pretty much, the eastern side at least) and here is the photo set I took there.
I missed a few key moments of drinking the requisite beer at the top of the passes, but sarah got them and she has some other good photos I'll post once she gets them up.
A brief summary: Small towns are cute. Their motels, less so. Yes, we stayed in a couple divey hotels, because there isn't a ton of public camping out there that isn't 1000ft of elevation from town. The passes were the best part. Mountain climbing, day after day, isn't terribly hard, its mostly just slow work. We ate like horses. Packed to be prepared for the apocalypse (serioously, who brings Moby Dick on tour?!) loaded, we did a pass a day and did most of the climbing in our grannies; we averaged ~5mph on uphill grades and anywhere from 38mph to 18mph on the downhill depending on wind. Coming from the east, Sherman Pass is worse than Washington/Rainy. I would do everything in my power to avoid doing the 50 mile approach to Rainy from the West, though, the highway there is really ugly going west. That must be one soul-crushing climb with no shoulder and heavy traffic.
