We've used Suiattle 2-years in a row, it has helped continue to set a standard for awesome-summer-bike camping. Lets not be limited to this location or ones we've been to.

Regardless of location, I'm in. Andre, did you have something else in mind? I really enjoyed Suiattle last year and would love to return, but it would also be nice to try a new place.

Well there's closed and then there's closed. My votes for Suiattle. I'm not opposed to bicycling more than 8 miles if needbe if the roads closed farther back. I mean it's only like 12~15 from the cutoff.

Are you gonna go scout it out for us Scott?
In general that area sound like it is in flux. Conditions and access could be changing daily or weekly. It's just hard to know what to expect and thus prepare accordingly. The NWhiker forums seem to have pretty current info. An older trip report said that the large wooden ramp at Downey Creek had been removed, a contractor took his 'borrowed' wood back. There 'might' be a ladder there.
I don't have any specific alternatives to offer now but something within a 2 hour travel radius of Seattle is what I was imagining. I'm not against Suiattle but I'd open to other alternatives.

It was really fun last year even though I was on medication for strep throat.
I have to be in Stanwood that night. :(

I'm still in! Wish I could go scouting today - it's gorgeous out there. Alas, another 4 hours of meetings await me.

Absolutely. I'll probably end up doing this one on my dinglespeed, since I'm lending the 650b front wheel from my Kogswell to Liz, and the road is supposed to be pretty flat and chill anyway.

I'll followup my previous non-committal replies and say I'm not going to make this trip. I'm hoping to squeeze in an awesome camping trip in August though.

IN. No, seriously, I mean it this time. Read my lips.
Called the Darrington ranger station earlier today. They said that Saturday and Sunday should be "no problem at all" for biking the road... Friday after 5 pm fine as well ... before 5 pm on Friday "might be OK, off and on, but no guarantees."
I asked about the Downey Creek bridge ramp thing. She said as far as she knew it was still there, but again, their standard caveat "but things are constantly changing, so..."
C'mon people, let's do this shit.

IN for camping. I am able to drive (LEAVING SATURDAY MORNING)...able to fit only 2 additional bicycles, besides my own, but plenty of space in the 4runner for people and gear. Are we doing a 65th park and ride meet up this year/ link to directions for trip?

Are you using roof racks or hitch?
I have 2 bike rack hitch that can be used for anyone with means.
Also looks like I'm a +1, who may or may not need a ride out there.

hitch rack, foam grooves for 2 bikes, I think a third could fit with sufficient extra bungies.
if enough people need rides, I have access to a giant truck that can uncomfortably seat 4ish additional people but lots of bikes/gear in the bed.

i need a ride, preferably on saturday. i'd drive myself, but the saab lacks a lot of space and racks.

i may have a good idea.
from what i gather, there are potentially six of us that would like to go up on saturday:
kristen
torrey
deven + 1
fred
kevin (if he doesn't go up on friday)
torrey has a truck that can fit a lot of bikes (how many do you think, torrey?) and gear, but not a lot of people.
i have a saab that can fit myself + 3 comfortably (myself + 4, if people don't mind getting cozy in the back seat), a good amount of gear, but no bikes.
how do y'all feel about a caravan sort of deal? bikes + torrey + 1 in the truck, gear + kristen + 3 other people in the saab? this way we can get all of our stuff to the trail and everyone can have a comfortable ride.

So I-5 to arlington
530 east to Darington
The 530 North out of Darrington
The highway will take across a long bridge over the Sauk river, at the end of the bridge the highway makes a 90deg left, but you stay straight.
The Suiattle river road is mostly paved (which kind of surprised me the first time) There are some patches of gravel but you will be following it till you get to some sort of barrier/washout probably with some cars already parked.
If the road is still blocked at the same location you have about 8 miles to Downey reek where there is/was the ramp. I actually liked that campsite better than the one 2 miles further but to each their own.
Pics here to give you a sense of the end of the road and the road surface and the diffenetnt campsites.
I could potentially drive (room for 3 extra people + 1 extra bike) but wouldn't mind catching a ride if possible ... anyway, let's meet at the park n' ride (65th St p&r, is it?) and see how it all shakes out. thanks for offering up the giant truck Torrey.
do we have a time yet? how's 9 am sound?

I can loan a 2 bike trunk rack if you guys need extra bike hauling capacity. I wish I could go, but I'm going to be spending 2 days in kayaking classes instead. There aren't enough weekends...
My 24/25 was busy, then double booked, and is now completely free. Sad face.

Damn, I REALLY want to go on this but don't think I have time based on how much I have to get ready for starting the PCT next weekend.
If any of you are going up Friday or get in early Saturday, I highly recommend hiking Sulphur Mountain! I did it last year as a day hike up / run down: at 11 miles, 4,935 feet elevation gain, it's a good trek; but more importantly, great berries and AMAZING VIEWS at the top : )
Big view of Glacier Peak from Summit of Sulphur Mountain:
Big Bunches of Berries!
Big views down into Suiattle valley:
Big Ridges... and Bitches too! Haha
If you want to do a shorter hike, take the time to explore up the Sulphur Creek Trail a bit, some neat log hops and rock crossings... it's really pretty up there as well, did that on Sunday before heading out:

We actually hiked naked on this trail for quite a while because it was hot and we knew no one else would be out there (which is totally fucking awesome by the way), so with that I dare you to take your shirt AND your pants off.
