I hate you chris. I was more looking for "I stayed at (fill in the blank) once and it was awesome/shit (choose one). I recommend getting black-out drunk at (bar)".

I've had great luck over the years dirt-baggin' it up in Hostels. far and away the cheapest option, usually. Just do your research so you don't end up in a linoleum bunk-bed hell hole. I've never been to Chicago, so I don't have anything else to contribute.
Lee, love the Sufijan Stevens cut. nice.

assuming you're not going the hobo route:
check out biddingfortravel.com to figure out the price people are winning priceline bids at, then bid at priceline.
If that's all too complicated, use hotwire.
Either way you don't get to know the name before you pay, but really, that's fine. If you were going to stay in a 1-star hotel, staying in a super discounted 3 star hotel for the same price will totally be worth the surprise factor.

-people, in Chicago
-balconies of places closed the night you'll be sleeping
-roofs
I recommend the first one.

A bit out of the way but with an "L" stop nearby, the Carlton Inn Midway has nice hotel rooms for < $100 a night. Free shuttle to Midway and all that, pretty handy if you're flying Southwest.

I have family there, but they'd hate you for your amazing hair, and would probably shave your head. I'm not being mean to you, I'm just saving your hair. Your girlfriend made me promise.
