god bless those REI employees, they are so helpful and nice 95% of the time...and I love when the nudge me on the shoulder and whisper in my ear "wait a week, there is a sale"

Plan C is to cut Derrick open like a Taun taun and wait out the bad weather inside his steaming extra-medium carcass.
And you thought he smelled bad on the outside.

The other thing I haven't seen mentioned is that you can get a waterproof baseball hat (derrick has one) and it will keep your head dry-ish and also keep rain out of your eyes mostly. this helps a lot when you're wearing glasses.

i don't own a waterproof baseball hat.
i am pro hat bills for glasses though. it helps a ton. also hankerchiefs help a lot. cotton ones. nothing sucks more than wearing tons of space age fabrics that don't suck up water and trying to find something absorbent to wipe glasses with. bandanas are a lifesaver

laugh at me if you want, but i think some of you may qualify for smartwool's athlete ambassadors program. you would get a whole mess of complimentary smartwool products to wear, test, and write about. or not. i just thought i'd share this link because i think it's a neat potential opportunity:

Hey Razi:
Maybe it'll be obvious when I get there, but is there a name that Costco's calling their rebranded Smartwool socks? Is it just the usual "Kirkland Signature"?
For my part, I love my poncho. I look like a lime green traffic cone, but it lets me layer more comfortably without the sauna effect that goretex creates. It's terrible for keeping your legs dry, though. I run pretty warm, but if it's pouring rain I'd rather just stick with long johns and cutoffs for the bottom half.
I've never found anything that works better for keeping your hands warm and dry than corner-store gloves underneath heavy-duty dishwashing gloves. Cheap as hell too.

Adam, langston and I went to Costco a couple weeks ago, and they had two different kinds of wool socks. These:
(in case you can't read the label: 71% merino wool, 21% nylon, 7% polyester, 1% lycra)
and one other kind (Wigwam, I think) that had a lower percentage of wool. I think these ones were 12.99 / 4. I don't think they're rebranded smartwool, but they're not bad, nor overly bulky or anything.
The wool percentage in those is the same as smartwool, but they have polyester and nylon and smartwools just have nylon, no polyester.
The socks i saw were in the Anchorage costco a year ago and I checked the blend and it matched smartwool *exactly*. The socks also looked, felt, smelled etc. like smartwool.
So maybe those are not smartwool? At the pricepoint though it is worth the experiment to get a pack of those socks and see if their durability, stink-cycle, and general comfiness is anything approaching the real deal.
Sorry if I misled people. That was not my intention.
Also, wigwam socks are an excellent choice. I bought a lightweight pair that I used to hike around South Africa in Jan-Mar (hot as balls climate---temperatures over 100F most of the time) and they were absolutely wonderful. My brother stole those socks.
I'd want to be an Icebreaker ambassador I think. Smartwool has been letting me down for the last few years with their socks getting less durable and their t-shirt going all over the place.
Icebreaker let me down by moving production from New Zealand to China and simplifying their designs without lowering prices. Their clothing is still my favorite though.
Ibex (a lot of their stuff is sewn in the US) would be my favorite if their t-shirts held up better for me. I have 9 year old Icebreaker shirts (some have probably been worn 400-500 times) with no holes, and 1 year old Ibex t-shirts with lots of holes.

I'm about to bite the bullet on some rain gear and need advice on pants.
Stretchy-spandex-esque pants that keep me warm, or just a gortex like shell that will keep me dry?
Seattle is such a hard place to prepare for. If I over-dress I end up drenched in sweat from the inside out.
I find two layers work better than rain pants on my lower half when it is cold and wet out. For the last couple of years it has been thin wool long johns under synthetic knickers. REI often has better knickers in the climbing/hiking department than in the cycling department. I like the Mountain Hardware ones that are $60ish, but I don't see them on REI's website right now, but here they are on Altrec:

I'm digging the nuclear orange on the REI jacket (I know, I'm a monster), but I don't know that I can abide not having pit zips.
Used to love my Showers Pass jacket, despite it being a little too baggy. They also have a few eVent material jackets; they're worth checking out. They tend to have better ventilation and as many or more pockets.

I wasn't sold on no pit zips either, but I got it because at 25% off sales (twice a year on this jacket I think) they are by far the cheapest quality option.
The no pit zips and few pockets makes it pack down really small, which means I carry it more often. The other option is to have a huge bag as Lee likes to demonstrate.
I don't find it to breath any worse than my last real rain jacket (made by Burley) which had 7 different vents and breathable fabric.

Well, it is 20% off right now if you haven't used your REI coupon.
Also, for those who were confused, you can use the 20% coupon on full price stuff _and_ the 30% coupon on sale/outlet stuff. It isn't either or. Some of the sale prices are already great, and the combo makes them killer.

Do you have to purchase the new _and_ used items at the same time/transaction?

Thanks to similar design decisions i've been able to carry this jacket for the last 15ish months without ever noticing i have it. It's kind of like having a phone app for a jacket.

No, I don't think so. I haven't found any sale/outlet (not used) items that I need.
Kayak dry suits are an awesome deal using this sale if any women happen to be looking. Kokatat ones that are normally $1000ish end up being around $500ish. They don't have men's sizes anymore though, and I don't need a second expensive drysuit. They'd probably be really uncomfortable to bike in too.

Man, what's up with the lack of availability of my size in knickers? Seems like everyone is out-of-stock of M (or S, depending on the brand).
At the end of the season, that would make sense, but at the beginning?
These, however, look sort of promising as a base layer. Anyone own/tried them?
daywalkerJoined: 09 Nov 2007Posts: 6108Location: Hatertown
If I had to guess I'd say everyone's trying to sell off their old stock and new stock is slow to arrive. Those sizes aren't available because they're the most popular.

I also just remembered that I saw these last time I was out shopping for jeans. I didn't buy them, so I have no idea if they suck or not, but apparently Levi's makes bike pants now too. If they made them in a slightly less constricting cut (like 514), I could be persuaded to buy a pair.

That makes sense, but it means they have no stock, new nor old, to sell to me. Waaah.

They'd be almost too much as a base layer. They're pretty thick, meant to be worn alone as the outer layer. You might wear thinner nylon shorts over them or maybe cut-off thin wool dress pants, but denim would be too much. The windproof bit over the knees is really nice. I like mine, but too fatty size-wise for you to test out.

Buddy of mine wears them, and he enjoys them.
I have the bib shorts that I wear, because I'm fat and I hate it when my shorts slide down my ass crack.
If you wanted loose knickers, Ibex also makes a pair, but they're $160 goddamned dollars

I actually own the Levi's commuter jacket, I've only used it a handful of times so far but it fits pretty well and has a great design. The reflective touches are pretty awesome and I love the extra long sleeves. Also, I love the open breast pocket for throwing my music-playing-phone inside and listening to stuff as I ride (without earbuds).
I'm also a huge fan of the 511 jeans, all of my pants are that model and fit great for my thigh size....though I don't have that bike friendly version.
FWIW, Levi's makes some really great long lasting quality garments for an evil multinational corporation employing 3rd world slaves!
It's all cotton so I obviously won't be enjoying/employing them as much during the rainy days....

This might be a really weird question, but here goes.
I've been pretty spoiled by the availability of inexpensive labor available in the developing world. Ghana was ridiculous, but even in Jamaica, I can get a shirt tailored for around US10dollars plus materials.
Mountain Hardwear knickers, at 60 bucks, seem like a pretty decent deal. But there are ALWAYS sales on synthetic trousers from sierra trading post, and these trousers can be way <$60.
What is the situation with alterations? When I was in Seattle recently I got some trousers from a suit hemmed and cuffed by a nice vietnamese lady and I think she might have charged ten bucks. I'm pretty sure that if I expressed a clear interest in getting a normal pair of trousers knickerfied that she would do it for around the same price. Has anyone does this? Is there some other feature of knickers that make them different than trousers with really high cuffs?
