So, I'm too poor to support my LBS, so I'm shopping online for new chain rings (after throwing the chain repeatedly my quad says, "oww, buy new rings, fucker"). I have a Sugino triple crankset, and want to replace the 52 & 38 rings. How do I know I'm getting the right rings?

You mean, make sure you get the right BCD? Measure center-to-center on two adjacent bolt-holes, then multiply by 1.7 (for 5 hole).

sorry to not supply the requisite levels of entertainment. The maths did in fact work, but I needed to know for sure before tearing my rig apart. I haven't yet bought new rings either, I found a 50/38 pair I had never used in my parts bin.

Bring them a good beer. They answer proper questions properly all day. Though they can't pay rent in beer either, beers go a lot farther than the knowledge of answering a good question.
Example - I go into Recycled to order spokes. I say, here is hub and rim, give me double butted black spokes. They do the numbers come back and say, we don't carry that in stock will have to order it and charge you for the whole box. I say oh I don't want to pay $100 for spokes can I have the numbers? They reluctantly hand over the post it note and I go and order spokes online from Dans Comp.
Now, I'm a dick for doing this. I didn't mean to be a dick for making them go through the work and then going to the internet to buy the pieces, but it's dumb to pay that kind of price. So I come back and deliver beer and next time I show up, they don't hate me.
This has happened a couple times, and because of this policy I'm still in their good graces and still get the family discount when I come in.
I can't afford to shop at LBS either, but I help where I can.

On the topic of replacing Chainrings:
Tragically I need to replace the vintage triple crankset (110/74 bcd) on my Trek 720 because the car door which I clipped my pedal not only ruined the pedal but now the entire drive-side crank arm has a elliptical wobble which is driving me bonkers.
I'm considering trying to move all 3 existing chainrings over to my vintage Sugino Super-Mighty double with 110 bolt pattern and currently 36/48 chainrings. (pretty much exactly like this)
Can this be done or is there some property inherently built into a double crank arm that prevents it from being converted to a triple?
ps. I do not understand replacement chainring pricing, is this some sort of printer cartridge ploy?

Drive-side only crank arms are widely available, so unless you have something super-rare, my first course of action would be to search out a new replacement arm of the same make/model. (what is it?).

This cannot be done. The "110/74 bcd" means that your existing crank has the large and middle chainring mounted to the 5 holes that are on a 110 bcd pattern. The smallest ring is on the 74mm bcd pattern.
That Sugino double only has 5 holes arranged on a 110 pattern, there are no 74mm bcd holes on which to mount your small ring.
You didn't mention bottom bracket, but when moving from one brand of crank arm to another it would not be uncommon for you to also have to replace the bottom bracket with one of a different spindle length.

From what I can tell it's a bit rare-ish, Sakae CX. Similar used cranksets on Ebay are just going for too much money for a scuffed crank arm + worn chainrings.
Considering just going for a new $85 Sugino XD350 and screw the overpriced vintage stuff.

This is the era of stuff that I collect.
I might have something that will work for your bike in late 80's Shimano Deore type quality you can have if you don't mind heading a little south to pick it up.
Not sure on crank lengths.....

Andrew, let me know if you head south. I have a bucket of hubs that are Ductape's that I've had since the swap.
