Frank Bethwaite tried it, but determined that the perf gains weren't big enough to warrant the added complications:

I think Amanda would like me to look into a water ballast system like Dark Star's, but that's probably out of our price range ;)

I looked up the Dark Star:

I love that deep keel.
Once I figure out the spinnaker on the 505 you'll have to come out sailing on it with Andrew or I. I don't think it'll get anywhere close to 20 knots, but it'll be a lot of fun.
The Tasar experiment is interesting. I wonder how a symmetrical kite would do, my read is that an asym couldn't allow them to sail deep enough to make it worthwhile. 117sqft also seems small, the current 505 spin is 280sqft. The Tasar is only about 100lbs lighter.
It's all theoretical until I figure out how to rig the silly thing.

Andrew didn't post it, so I will:
On his new boat :( Too much wind for his old sail.
On the other hand we fixed the smelly head, he made all of his cabinet doors stay closed when sailing, I fixed the starter relay on his engine, I replaced a pretty old main sheet, and he put the engine cover back on. Not a bad day at Shilshole.

New rod holders to open up the aft area of my boat, also a net holder.
Notice the teak oiled VG fir decking.

I like the fishing rod holder and new floorboards.
I've been getting busy with the fiberglass. The transom on the dinghy had delaminated from the bench. I cut it out, dug out a little bit of dry rot, and put it all back together with fresh epoxy.

It's almost ready for paint at this point.
I also made a gimbaled mount for my jetboil to make coffee on the go:

Did some crabbing over the weekend and noticed some idling issues with the little metal boat.
So:
-Adjusted my idol set screw
-pulled the prop and lubricated the shaft
-changed the oil/filter
-drained and changed the gear case lubricant
-replaced spark plugs
-replaced the zincs
Idles real nice now, running like a top.
