I read this first on the SB website, but someone posted it again on bike pirates today.
"I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailleur? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"
-- Tour de France founder Henri Desgrange, in a 1902 L'Equipe article
It's a cool quote and all, but I just wanted to make fun of the guy for spelling his name Henri.

Concur about negative correlation between penis size and the need for a Hummer.
The mil-spec ones are designed to have shit loads of torque and be very hard to get stuck (although a few clever idiots always manage). Also, they have a few weird little mods. Among other things, we use ours to tow this thing:
If those pussies driving the Hummers were so hard core, they'd go with the military ones. They aren't quiet and they have almost no creature comforts. Some of the newer ones have decent seats but that's about it. The heaters have two settings: Africa and off.
But, it's better than walking.

700 hp is nuts.
a M939 5-ton
only has 250 bhp. I drove one of these things around New Orleans for two weeks loaded down with supplies and crap and almost nothing slowed me down.

*stepping back for a moment*
How the hell did we get from debating fixed gears to talking about turbo diesel trucks and hummers?
