Tonight I took the bus home from work, which involves a transfer and a five block walk through downtown. As I waited to cross 3rd Ave, I noticed that the man next to me (who I had never seen before) was walking my missing bike! It wasn't the guy who took the bike on Thursday. I stopped and talked to him:
Me: Where'd you get that bike?
Him: Uh...
Me: (looking at the bike more carefully) That's MY bike. It's got one grip shifter and one lever shifter, and the mismatched slick tires, and the odd seat, and the missing decal, and my tail light.
Him: No man, I've had this bike for like, a long time
Me: No, it's mine, and it was stolen. (And I pull the bike away from him)
Him: No man
Me: Call the cops!
And I rode away.
When I got home and took inventory, I found that I had lost a Helmet, a Headlight, a water bottle, and the toe clips. But, I had gained a Large padlock (that I don't have the key for) a small red ribbon, and a large rubber band. Also, someone thoroughly cleaned the bike.
I have to remove and re-install the rear brake cable to get the padlock off, but all in all I'm pretty pleased.
The Cateye tail light was still on the bike, which cost more than all the other parts combined!
WooHoo.
