i had similar issues on my XP computer at work with my iPod (it runs like a champ on my Mac at home).

you have the XP Service Pack 2 update on your home computer? the iPod software requires SP2 to run properly. Also check to make sure you have the most recent version of the iPod Updater software from Apple (they update it once a month or so -- http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/). Install the newest version of the software, then use it to reformat your iPod (WILL DELETE ANY MUSIC CURRENTLY ON THERE -- BACK IT UP FIRST -- most recent version is from October 12, 2005) to ensure that your iPod has the most recent version of the software installed.

y'know oddly enough my iPod has always worked fine with my PC and very poorly with my powerbook.
