That is a good beginner gear. Please *everyone* refer to your gears in gear inches. It is so much easier to compare. Yours is a 67.5 inch gear pretty good for a beginner. You may want to up it a little as you get stronger. Most of us are running about a 70 inch gear. You can put a fixed cog on your existing hub. I can get it tight enough that it won't come off. I have a large chain whip. You see me skid all the time wet or dry and mine has not budged. No lockring too! It is a myth that your legs will get it tighter than a chain whip. My chain whip is 14 inches long, and I apply at least 100 pounds of force to the very end. Stuart saw me do it and he is running no lockring. Denny can you verify my math here? You or I (200+ Lbs.) stomping on the pedals vs. the chain whip:

ok, i'm kind of an idiot. i know about different gear ratios, but how do you measure gear inches?

Gear Inches = (wheel diameter) * (chainring teeth) / (cog teeth)
It's an equivalent to how large of a wheel you would have if you were riding an old Ordinary style bicycle (1:1).
a handy-dandy chart, plus skid points for fixed gear riders worried about tire longevity.
Don't forget to multiply by 0.6 if you're from Canada.
