Short version: It's bacterial. It's contagious. I've been exposed. If you were on last night's ride, watch your health for the next two weeks, especially if you have immune problems or hang out with un-immunized kids. I'm sorry I went on the ride last night, because a lot of what I'm posting here I didn't learn until today.
Long version: There's an outbreak on Mercer Island. My coworker's kid got sick, and spread it to my coworker, who came to work for several days with active symptoms, thus exposing the entire building, and particularly our department. (Her fucking doctor apparently didn't tell her the part about it being contagious).)
Whooping cough in healthy adults is easily treated with antibiotics, but it's serious business for immune-suppressed adults and non-immunized kids. It's one of those illnesses that the CDC takes very seriously, making it a Public Health concern, so we're under orders to watch for any cold-like symptoms.
I woke up this morning with a slight sore throat and stuffy nose. It could very well *be* a cold, or the aftereffects of last night's ride. Nonetheless, I have no real choice but to do my part for Public Health. I'm on antibiotics and have doctor's orders not to return to work until next Wednesday.
Viva quarantine.
