Just a quick shot of the bike on the news, I saw those deep V fixie wheels popular with the youngsters and so thought of you lot.
On September 10th, at approximately 6:18 pm, a cyclist was traveling southbound on University Way NE when he collided with a car turning from northbound on University Way NE to westbound on NE Campus Parkway.
The collision caused the cyclist to be thrown from his bicycle, where he landed in the street. Seattle Fire Department Medics transported the male victim to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Traffic Collision Investigation Sqaud (TCIS) detectives responded and conducted their investigation at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was evaluated for any signs of impairment, and none were detected. TCIS detectives will be responsible for the follow up investigation.

"Are those guys hitting each other? Should someone be doing something about this?" "No, they're just playing this game that they play, and they'll wear themselves out in a minute or two."

So it turns out guy delivered for Jimmy Johns. I met him briefly back in July, and he was a stand up guy. A good friend of a few of my buddies too.
I have a bunch of bikes left over from the movie shoot, and was considering installing a ghost bike. But I'm hesitant since it would definitely scare new freshman away from bikes. And Ave Rats would probably rip it off. thoughts?

Hmmm. The spelling in this <a href="http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2011/09/12/u-district-cyclist-was-not-wearing-a-helmet-when-he-was-killed-says-witness">this letter</a> to the Slog from Bike Messenger Fred sounds SUSPICIOUSLY like the atrocious spelling of our own Little Fred.

Shame on Eli for including this uncorroborated non-witness account.
By all means, let's continue to heap blame on the victim here.
And Fred, if that was you that sent that email you should be ashamed.
You did not witness the accident nor do you have credible knowledge of whether or not he was wearing a helmet.
Let's not blame helmets and Jimmy John's for the driver who was LEGALLY at fault here.
Rides quarterly.

A couple of things:
* It's semi-legit to point out that Jimmy John's claims about their riders wearing a helmet is bullshit. That being said, their helmet policy would be difficult to enforce and I don't think it's a point worth haggling over. The point is, some cyclists wear helmets and some don't.
* Do we know who was legally at fault, Jeff? Last I heard there was just speculation and the police hadn't said yet.
* Fred, not seeing a helmet doesn't mean there wasn't one. You don't mention seeing a body, either, but I assure you there was one. Maybe the helmet was still on his head?
Either way, the whole thing is a fucking travesty. That's four deaths this summer, not at all how I'd prefer to raise awareness.
