computer halp! Anything and everything .83 Seattle

I am in need of some technical support and was wondering if anyone would be willing to help me out!

My 4 year old hp laptop crashed in December and I haven't been able to log on to Windows since...I tried to go into the setup menu and save all of my pictures, music, docs ect to an external drive but my computer wont recognize the external drive. After many failed attempts to correct the situation I gave up and started using my 10 year old dell laptop which has numerous problems of its own and now will not connect to my internet.

I think it may be time to give in a get a new computer but I really want to get all my old pictures and music off my HP. I thought I would check on here to see if anyone has any suggestions or could offer some tech support before I take it in somewhere.
