Operating heavy equipment is serious business.
Is it possible to quote individual posts of .83 to twitter? That was a succinct evaluation Mr. Joeball.

In , a South Carolina driver was just convicted of felony manslaughter for killing a cyclist.

Felony manslaughter seems high, but in the ballpark of what this sort of thing should go for. Dude plows into 4 cyclists and kills one of them - yep. Sounds about right.
But I mean here's the thing. It's a tricky topic. You're trying to set a precedent so the legal system knows how to treat this stuff, you're trying to provide a visible deterrent so drivers take this sort of thing more seriously in the future, but you're also trying to prevent hit and runs.
If the penalty for this stuff is summary execution or 10 years in jail or $250,000 (or whatever) every time a driver strikes a cyclist you'll probably see an immediate reduction in the number of cyclists hit followed by a sharp increase in the amount of people fleeing the scene, leaving more wounded cyclists on the side of the road. So it's a tricky topic - the balance isn't always so obvious.
The thing is, the system isn't the only thing at stake here - these are peoples lives and destroying two lives isn't better than destroying one. I don't know that you can boilerplate this sort of thing, but I like the idea that it's being taken more seriously.
er... anyhow. Cool story bro I guess. It's a tricky topic and watching someone get the hammer for it... well it's better than watching them skate by with a $42 fine, but still feels unfortunate I guess. I realize I'm a little scattered in my reply. It definitely leaves me with mixed feelings.
