I think I read from the BBI manual the vast majority of chain failures are just from reinstalling a rivet off center enough to peel off bits of the outer plate, or bending the rivet during reinsertion, or not repeening or something.
I have like 10,000 miles on the same very cheap cassette, the same, single chainring, and 4 rotated chains on that mileage, all elongated by over a half percent. I only lube the thing when I know it's not going to rain for some time and I make time to rotate a chain and clean it. It shifts like shit, but that's what microindexed/friction shifters are for. I think all the skipping just comes from the freehub and I stopped caring. I don't know if that could be catastrophic for your riding.
Multiple chainrings with a chain worn to a half percent could be a problem if some rings are used way more than others.

pulled the chain out of my backpack to look at it, and it failed at the master link. I guess that would be a logical week point.
