Your opinions solicited in this decision.
New York Fuhgettaboudit (extreme bike security, approx. $70)
or
Evolution (choice of bike messengers worldwide, approx. $45)
As John's recent theft demonstrated, if theives are hell-bent, well, they take the whole damn set-up. And nothing beat's renter's/home owner's insurance. Still, a decision has to be made.
Do advise!

evolution = 3 seconds with a breaker bar.
NYLock = 12 minutes with an angle grinder or they have to rip the bike rack out of the ground***.
***Bike rack getting ripped out of the ground results in witness, ends in prosecution. Possible bike return.
That being said, unless you have a stupid expensive bike frame... get this:
the NY 3000 still has the double shackle and takes about 7-10 minutes with a battery powered cutoff wheel.
I got a faghettaboutit and to replace my 3000 and I wish I had gotten another 3000... the faghettaboutit has too small of a shackle for some of seattles bike racks if you have a long fork rake.
Evolutions are not well made, if you want a cheap good lock, the pocket size onguard, it still has the double shackle.
But I like the Krypto NY 3000 the most of any lock I have used.

here's the URL for the on-guard I have
it's the only small lock I have thought would even slow a person down.
but Jill has a point, if I was going to use a U-lock to beat the fuck out of someone... the NY fahghettaboutit(sp?) is definitely going to allow you the most rapid snap of the wrist to send the steel into someone's teeth. The NY 3000 will slow ya down so the person can duck... although that might lead to an ocular fracture... which is just as effective... but you don't get the joy of seeing the guy who tried to assault you scrambling around on the ground trying to gather up his incisors...
so... kinda a toss up.
Gregg just got a fahgettaboutit after fiddling with mine... and he pointed out that the cylinder actuates better than anything else out there...

Or... get a E series sliding bolt and connect it with a chain.
and not meaning to be totally un-pc... MulTLock is Israeli... and the israeli's use the Mul-T-Lock's to lock up palestinians . so... if there is one type of person that is more paranoid on this planet than a cyclist and their bike... it would bee a jew locking up a palestinian. Hell... I just found out that they use MulTlock's at guantanamo also... so... that's a win/win in my book... as far as bike security goes...
I mean... totally un-pc... but hey... go figure...
besides... pad locks by the guys who churn out Uzi's and Galils!. yeah baby!

Many thanks for the input and additional information. Having that tool & time frame information is more of a selling point than the 1-10 rating on the Kryptonite website.
Hadn't considered looking into what Gitmo is using to lock people up . but I imagine they are quite effective. ;)
