Ha. We're not even allowed to do that anymore at the shop. We basically lost a $500 tool to a $150 frame. Seemed like a bad deal at the time. It's a pain in the ass even when everything goes smoothly. If the frame isn't worth a Phil, it's probably not worth rethreading either.

Aaron retapped my Raleigh Reliant when I built it out this fall.
Quality tools + skilled mechanic = no sweat.
What's the worse that could happen, your frame which currently is unacceptably shitty gets ruined? Pay someone else to do it, so they have to replace their own broken tool if they fuck it up.

We've run our English taps through old Raleigh bottom brackets several times at 20/20. Seems to work great.
I have a couple of friends with old Raleigh Twenties. We did the re-tapping operation to one of them after cutting off part of the bottom bracket shell (with a hacksaw!) to bring it down to 68mm. Worked great.
