Do you have a drill press and a dremel? At some of the wrench parties Aaron has put the spindal in the drill press chuck and turn it on, then take a dremel with a small ( ~1/4" dia.) dremel grinding bit and hold the dremel perpendicular to the spindal so the radius of the grinding bit fits along the bearing race. This allows you to evenly smooth up the surface. It removes some of the hardened surface treatment but gets you a smoother surface and will extend the life of the spindal. If you have to go hunting about for a new spindal it may be just worth the time to get the cartridge BB you need for those cranks.

Some of us like things. Some of us are just joyless, bitter assholes.
