I'm splitting for the San Juans middle of next week for a few days (coming back Saturday so as to avoid some of the tourists), any of you ever stayed on before? Is there a park that, given my "arrive late, leave early" sleep-in-the-bushes-in-a-tarp strategy of vagabonding will allow me and my bicycle unmolested berth for a few hours?

With the sleep-in-the-bushes-in-a-tarp strategy, you can camp almost anywhere that's not a major thoroughfare or someone's front yard. I usually bring a tent, stove, etc. and get a little pickier about my camping spot.
I've never been to this island, but after looking at the internet, here are some places I might check out:
I usually look for a place with some clear ground, but near trees. A place that won't fill up with water if it rains a lot, and with good eastern exposure so that my tent will dry in the morning. While I find it amusing to look for places like this on the internet, it is no substitute for just going there and looking around.
Bonus ways of using the internet to search for camping spots:
- search real-estate listings for undeveloped land
- look for sites of future housing developments or newly-built uninhabited ones
- look for utility rights-of-way such as telephone lines (if you're not afraid of EMR), water pumping station, etc. Sometimes there are fences, but there is usually unused public land around.

if anyone gives you any shit, just explain that you're bike touring around and got stuck on the island between ferries. most people are pretty nice but some out there can be pesky about trespassing. if you're nice and friendly you'll probably get offered someone's yard
there are rarely cops on the island, or anyone else to enforce, just be quiet and sneaky and you should be fine. even in public park
