HAY.
I'm finally buying parts for the cross check I got for my birthday. I've been looking at the plethora of possible parts and yano, I'm a little stuck. I need to get a crankset + BB, and I wonder if anyone has any suggestions for one which is not too heavy and which is reasonably durable. I have found a sugino compact crankset which seems pretty cool, except for the JIS square taper. I am tempted to just get a shimano ultegra or 105, but the splined BB and integrated crank seems a little sketchy. Campy?
What's your favorite?

I'm cheap and lazy. After I toasted the cranks that came stock on my CrossCheck I went and bought a triple 110/74 - Sugino XD300 crankset and ran it as a compact double with a 110 mm BB. It worked just fine.
The only thing not to like - that bolt hidden behind the crank arm shit.

I do fine in seattle on my 42x16 (as long as I'm not blackout drunk), but then, I wouldn't want to hammer that sucker up 50 miles of rolling hills. I can get away with a compact double (and the one I was looking at would have given me a range from 33-115 gear inches) but the change from the low ring to the high ring was something like 4 cogs to get the next step (as in I would have to shift down 3 or 4 cogs to get something less than 10 gear inches) and i just wonder how useful that is; on my current 105 triple (road bike), I manage to use all the front rings regularly enough.

yeah, what matthew can ride and what eric can ride are not the same.
go for the triple. i like the 26-36-46 front and 11-34 rear on my lht - 20" to 113" with my 700x35 tires. i've considered changing it up for a low double (40-22), since i very rarely need to have over 100" but for towing and utility purposes i could occasionally benefit from a lower gear.
