If good cycling technique is poetry in motion, mine's a dirty limerick.

we are coming out of a 20 year lull of moderate and warm weather. In the next few years we should be getting more snow. Not sure if it is worth it yet, but as Joby says, they will last you 5-10 years and it is only 3-4 minutes to change them out with your regular tires. It's weather, so not the best thing to wager on but the PDO has hinted at more intense winters in the next decade.
I'm thinking of a pair. I suspect, and Joby would be the person to ask... that they hold on Ice far far better than a cross tire.

Yeah, Tire tread is useless unless it leaves an impression in the thing you're rolling over.
A cyclecross tire would do you a lot of good in soft snow. It would be totally worthless (in fact, worse than a slick) on hard frozen ice. no lug penetration = no traction benefit.
that's where studs come in.

If the river was whiskey I'd turn myself into a duck, I'd dive to the bottom and never come up.

My studded tires have been stuck at the UPS distribution point in limbo since the 22nd due to the snow and ice. There's some irony for you. By the time it clears up they'll deliver the tires but by the time it clears up I won't need them. Fuckers. Can't get them myself - apparently they don't want to unload them from the fucking truck. I just have to wait. Very frustrating.
Finally went down to Recycled Cycles and picked up some used monster tires on the cheap. No studs, but better than the (almost) slicks I had on it.
