So I just picked up a singlespeed 'cross bike for simple commuting and racing next season, and I noticed the rear hub has some weird stuff on the nondrive side. How can I tell if that's the connections I need for a fixed gear rear wheel?
Ultimately, I'd like to have a flip flop rear so I can coast during races but be fixed for wet commuting. I'll bring it on Thursday if taking a closer look helps.
Pertinent details:
2008 Specialized Tricross Single.
Alexrims ACE-19 wheelset.
Freewheel has a shimano sf-mx30... Thingy. Looks like it combines a freewheel and a single ring.

a fixed gear hub looks like this:

that's an iro one but i bet your alex wheelset has the same or similar hub (formula).
there is normal (right-hand) threading for a freewheel or fixed cog, and then a stepped-down reverse threading for a lockring that you countertighten against the fixed cog to keep it from unthreading under backpressure.

Was the bike 2nd hand?
The non drive side sounds like it is a short cassette carrier, the lock ring you describe has the same torque requirement as a shimano cassette/freehub.
Some SS hubs have these instead of a thread on freewheel.
I suppose there is a slight chance there is a set of track threads under your drive side if there is a thread on freewheel installed in place of a track cog.
