i need to rebuild the wheels on my shitty blue single.
what rims do i NEED?
light but burly is key.
leaning toward open pros, convince me otherwise.
and don't even suggest velocity unless your suggesting something other than deep v's and you have a good reasoning.
subquestion - anyone ever buildup any alex road rims?
subsubquestion - how's your ma?
and i'm spent.

I've built up several of the Alex DA 28 rims. They're very stiff, take a beating, and build up nicely. Great rim for the price.

the alex cr-18 keep getting recomended to me. I have some velocity dyads on my cross check, and I like 'em a lot. lighter than Deep V. Properly built aeroheads should bee good for riding a lot, but probably about the same as mavics.

stata is of course thinking of the sun cr-18. great rim, and good price as well. i've built a number of wheels on dyads and i've been happy with them, but for cheaper i think the cr-18 is just as good and about the same weight. both are 22mm wide, i believe, so good for tires on the fatter side.
that said, i think you should get pink deep v's with nonmachined sidewalls. pimp that shit out!

The Velocity rim that I'd recommend is the Synergy. It's a light f'n mtb extrusion but also made in 700C, tough, builds up nicely. It comes in an off-center version for the rear.

I like the Sun CR-18 too because they are cheap (the last one that I bought from Perfect Wheel was around $30) and last forever. They don't build up quite as nicely and you end up with a little uneven spoke tension and sometimes a noticable rim joint. Those don't end up being long term issues.
I'm not a big fan of the Open Pro because the rim joint always starts making an annoying ticking noise long before the rim actually dies. They are also too narrow for the tires that I run (30-35mm), but maybe that isn't an issue for you. The CR-18 and Synergy are both 22-23mm wide and would be too wide for 23mm tires, but are great for 28mm and wider tires.

DT Swiss RR 1.1 double eyelet. I just built up a set and they seem great so far. I'd say they're a bit beefier than open-pro's.

Matthew. I will buy those rims for you next week. I could even meet you over on your side. My girlfriend and I are going to be sailing in that area next week. PM me if you want.
