on my blue rubbered single speed i changed out the stem and dropped in a 20 dollar 1 1/8 adapter. im pretty happy with it so far. attached on a normal stem and handlebars from a more current set up and was up and going in a few minutes.

I have a few steel stems if you want to give one a try. They aren't any heavier than your old SR, and will be a lot stiffer.
What length/rise/quill extension do you need?

Rise is no issue, because I usually like 'em all the way down so I can get my hipster crouch on. Reach: 90ish, shorter is good but not much longer.
Something in the 74degree range is ideal, and anything more than 90degrees just looks silly on a road bike.
If you don't have anything like that handy, no worries, I'd happily buy one.
I'm mainly trying to find out what is the stiffest replacement for my wimpy/creaky old SR.
thanks
