Does anybody know the fattiest tires I can get on a crosscheck? Surly claims it's 45 mm, has anybody tried larger? Also, what are the dopest fat, 700c tires in the land?

i have run 700x50 big apples on my long haul trucker, minus fenders. they're big. and heavy, due to the giant thick blue strip inside.

The giant, thick, blue strip inside can be found in the Marathon Plus tires. The Big Apples have a kevlar belt.
I'm just sayin'.

I put some panaracer fire cross tires (45c) on my cross check, and they fit pretty well except for a small amount of chainstay rub when I stand up and pedal hard. They also look monster since they have big knobs. This means big apples would certainly fit, as everyone else says. I do suggest getting the ones without armored sidewalls since they are significantly lighter. I also second Alex's suggestion to get the panaracer fatty tires, since they're plush and relatively light, and they ride really nice.

I rub on my doublecross, and they're fat, reasonably punctureproof (giant jagged pieces of metal can still get through when the bike is loaded up for a tour, but glass doesn't stand a chance), pretty light, fast and grippy, and they fit nicely with the 45 mm cascadia fenders.
